The Hugh Lane Gallery

A moment to appreciate art in the heart of Dublin City Centre,

The Hugh Lane Gallery a "hidden gem in dublin",
which features everything from famous paintings to provocative sculptures and multimedia projects, celebrates the variety and diversity of human expression. The gallery's carefully planned exhibition areas will wrap you in an atmosphere of inspiration and creativity as you stroll through them. The spaces are flooded with natural light, which highlights the artwork's beauty and promotes an  atmosphere to appreciate the work around you.

A place of excitement, calm and learning. In one of Irelands impressive architectural buildings with a beautiful new modern wing housing some of the more modern works. It houses modern and contemporary works, from Francis Bacon to Sean Scully.

The gallery is located in the magnificent Charlemont House, a Georgian townhouse from the eighteenth century, which offers a rich historical setting for the contemporary artworks on display. The facade of the building is note worthy with a flanked entrance that invites the visitors into the space, setting a building back from the road allows people to gather and spill out of the gallery, it creates a sense of calm and allows you to walk up to the buildings and appreciate  it as a whole in the street scape. Note its fine workmanship, traditional proportions, and symmetry. Check out the delicately carved stone elements, such as friezes, pediments, and mouldings, surround the entryway as you approach the building.

It serves as a centre for cultural events and neighbourhood involvement, such as life drawing classes, seminars and music events.Take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal at the on-site café Le Grá meaning with love in Irish, where you may unwind and discuss with friends the work you just saw. What a great place to to sit a hidden cafe away from the busy city.

WHATS ON !!

The Early collection which comprises of work from the UK,ITALY,IRELAND AND ITALIAN. Sean Scully is one of Irelands best modern artist, it is the largest collection of his work. Francis Bacons studio and archive which was donated to the gallery in 1998. Check out there website for further information and visiting times. This gallery should be seen and revisited to as it boasts a large collection of European art in which tells a rich history.

Sean Scully's work on my recent visit really stood out to me. His work comprises of geometric designs, rich in colour and texture that evoke both sensuality and formality. His work in The Hugh Lane is a series known as Doric paintings. The paintings were intended as a celebration of the contribution of classical Greek culture to humanity, and the title alludes to one of the three orders of ancient Greek architecture, the least elaborate Doric order. Simple  yet beautiful see image below, what do you think of his work ? Now go check out the Hugh Lane !

Best wishes & thanks for reading,
 Yours Eva

  2. I'm so fond of this place. Last December, just before Christmas, I arrived in Dublin off of McGinley's bus to do a resit exam that I was feeling pretty ropey about, and being the Saturday before Christmas the UCD Library was closed. They let me sit in here and study for as long as I needed, without even making me pay anything. And in the end, I did pretty well in the exam! I'm so grateful to the staff here for that, and thus it will always hold a very fond memory for me. Someday soon I must return, and this time actually appreciate some of the art :)
